2007 Home and Outdoor Living Show

This was the reason I was in town. My former company had sent me to work this show and I was here in booth #1524.

For more than 20 years now the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association (www.charlestonhomebuilders.org) has been hosting this popular show. This year’s show was one of the biggest with over 10,000 people attending and they actually sold out of vendor space this year. Close to 200 vendors were present this year.

The show is open to the public and pros alike. Here you will find things for the inside and outside of your home as well as just for indulging your self, like the spas that were located right next to me. Then there were a few places such as myself that were ready to whisk you away on vacation while maybe you had someone else do the work for you. Should you be lucky enough to be from the area and have one of those scrumptious historical houses, they have plenty of people who had beautiful reproduction pieces that make you home look just as it should.

They also hosted a number of seminars over the weekend. The show offered discussions on new decorating trends and how to achieve the look, how to maintain your gardens, and for pros a discussion on working with Hispanic employees. There were also master gardeners on hand to answer any question you may have on how to have a green thumb. There were local authors who were around to offer advice and sign books. Antique appraiser, Frank Sarnowski was also present to tell you if your old family heirloom was worth a fortune, or if by fixing that crack in your vase you just ruined it. There was also a celebrity appearance by Bob the Builder. Many of the vendors were offering freebies such as pens and coasters. One of my favorites was the Real Estate agent who had free Charleston calendars. The there were plenty of chances to win free stuff from vacations, a tractor, and the biggie was $5,000 to spend with any vendor. Though I tried, I didn’t win a thing!

The show was held at the large-scaled Charleston Area Convention Center Complex (www.charlestonconvention.com). This massive building features over 135,000 of exhibit space. It is part of the coliseum and there is a beautiful Embassy Suites attached. There are several other hotels within walking distance and several strip malls nearby.

The show is typically held near the end of February just in time to get your spring chores started. This year’s admission was $6. I would check to see if there is concert next door, and if there is go early. Parking is free and plentiful. If you need ideas to spruce up your home, then this is the place to go in Charleston. You can check the builders association for dates for the 2008 show.
