Description: AmusingAn angled retaining wall separated the middle level walkway from the upper level. Sandstone carvings of fossilized fish and dinosaur bones complete with information plaques provided interest to young and old. Periodically steps connected the levels. At the side of the steps were smooth marble railings, for lack of a better term, which young kids were using as slides. Many very young children wear chaps, so that parents just have them squat on sidewalks in lieu of using restrooms. A woman with a little one dressed in such as an outfit decided to aide her youngster is sliding. She did it several times while I wondered how that must have felt on the kid’s bare bottom. Much to my dismay, there were no abrupt stops so it must be a very smooth surface indeed. Meanwhile rigor mortis was settling into my rear while I sat on a chunk of sidewalk to watch.
All Dressed UpOn the upper most level, green grass areas with small hills and groves of weeping willows provided the seclusion lovers sought. These lush areas along with the beach were very popular for wedding photos. I saw eight couples posing for photographers in their wedding clothing. I couldn’t help but notice that many of the women had slacks on underneath as they were walking to their chosen location and their groom was holding the length of the dress to the height of their knees. So much for the superstition of the groom seeing the wedding dress before the wedding!
GardensWell-trimmed bushes in several colors created a rainbow that swirled around a rose garden and peony garden. In the very center was a display of potted plants to flowering marigolds and sweet Williams. A tiny lone Christmas topped off the pyramid.
A terraced archway with flowering vines scented the air and shielded the sun from the adults as they played cards and mahjong.
Water PlayA large tiled areas contained spigots that produced streams of water straight up which many people took advantage of to cool off in when the mid day heat settled in.
Along the upper level, there were also half dozen tennis courts and smooth, hard-packed sandy areas for playing croquet. A large swimming pool, not yet open had interesting features. Besides the slides, were teeter-totters with floatation balloons underneath the seat and swim-through caves.
Several piers are located with the boundaries of the park. Some are for the large cruise ships, others transport passengers across the river to Wuchang, and others for commercial use.
Throughout the park are bronze statues of children at play and whimsical sea-related creatures. There are plenty of vendors selling food, beverages and toys and a restaurant located inside the Wuhan Port of Passenger Transport building. The day and evening Yangtze River cruises also depart within the park at the Yuehan Port.
The park is open 24 hours and is free. Entry is anywhere along Yiang Dadao.
