Museo Regional de Arqueología de Yucatán

This Museum is in a beautiful colonial building and is extremely well laid out and informative (the information is in Spanish). The museum focuses on Mayan culture and history and has excellent explanations of beliefs, practices, and even the alphabet and numbering system. Even for those members of the family who aren't fascinated by this, the building is beautiful and quite cool compared to the hot midday sun. It is located a short walk from the main plaza and many hotels.

Museo Regional de Arqueología de Yucatán - Palacio Canton

This is one of the majestic colonial houses that adorns Paseo Montejo, and was the residence of the conqueror of this area (he slaughtered the Mayans in a brutal way, following his father´s steps but with more cruelty), as a "revenge" the modern government decided to turn his mansion into the Anthropology Museum of Merida.

The contrast can't be more exaggerated, you have a French style mansion with all the ornaments and great woodworks in stairs, doors, windows, also some chandeliers hanging from the ceiling but in the displays you get the old ancient fruits of Mayan culture and such an amazing craft it is. From masks to idols, to great slabs of limestone you can just barely imagine what the rest or the most magnificent pieces were in the peak of the Mayan reign! Now imagine a colossal and amazing task, to carve all this rock without metal tools!!!!!!

There is a small fee to pay at the entrance, like in all Mexican museums is around 40 pesos (less than $4 USD, Feb 2006). Sorry all the signs and explanations are in Spanish, you have to bring your own guide.

There is a room devoted to Ek Balam (Black Jaguar) a smaller site than Chichen Itza, but fuller of magnificent discoveries and more grandiose sculptures.

Museum is open 7:00 - 19:00
