Hiking the Nevado de Toluca

Trekking this volcano is easy but you still need to have good shoes as the rocks are tricky loose. The normal route is to leave your car at the second checkpoint "la pluma" in the parking lot, you ascend to the rim of the volcano via a short (30-45 min at slow pace) trek uphill.

Once you reach the rim you will be rewarded with a great view, the lakes below are a great sight. Along the well worn route you will find the local flora, some variety of snow flowers and mush.

Nevado de Toluca

Even if you are not a good trekker and you are in bad shape you can get up to the middle of the crater, just drive all the way.

This extinct volcano has a couple of lakes in the crater and a road that takes you to the middle of it, even though is the 4th tallest mountain in Mexico with 4,680 meters (almost 14,000 feet).

The name is Nevado de Toluca (the Snowy of Toluca) because it used to be topped with snow all year round, but lately with the global warming issue is difficult to get any white stuff, even in winter due to the lack of humidity.
