La Casa del Arbol (Puyo)

Located just a short distance from the jungle town of Puyo, La Casa del Arbol offers a unique opportunity to explore the jungle at close quarters, along with a whole host of other activities, without having to venture fully into the jungle—an ideal day trip.

The main spectacle and highlight for myself is the huge "treehouse," an observatory tower built around a 200-year-old tree. Looking up the 11 floors from the ground automatically sent my legs into a shaking meltdown, especially when taking into account the rickety structure. Sometimes I hate being scared of heights!

Strangely though, as you climb the 63 stairs and 11 floors to the top, you feel more and more assured with the safety of the treehouse, even with the copious amounts of ants (and, I believe, also termites) going about their daily business. By the time you reach the top, the jungle canopy is below you, allowing a unique view of jungle life and an excellent opportunity to spot bird species that would otherwise be virtually impossible from the ground. Within the treehouse structure there has been built a couple of observatory rooms, which can be used by any avid bird enthusiast. Although I’m not the biggest fan of heights, it was certainly interesting to see the jungle from above and not below.

As well as the huge treehouse, La Casa del Arbol also boasts a number of other activities offered to its guests. There is a fish pond; restaurant; and cold, relaxing swimming pool. There is also a family of friendly squirrel monkeys that you can play with and feed. I know I’m an adult but I honestly could let monkeys jump over me all day long.

Upon my visit, a spa and sauna complex was also being built. Unlike other spas and saunas, this was being built to resemble a hobbit house out of The Lord of the Rings, built into the hillside and containing a complex system of tunnels and quaint little rooms decorated with mosaic tiles. I can imagine this making a very rewarding and relaxing visit once finished.

Entry to La Casa del Arbol costs $1.50 for all of these activities. Hikes into the surrounding forest can also be undertaken for an extra cost. To reach La Casa del Arbol take the road from Puyo towards Shell turning left at Te Zulay, following the road towards Madre Tierra. La Casa del Arbol is on your right and is signposted. A taxi from Puyo would cost you around $3 or $4. More information can be found at the Tourist Information in Puyo, by emailing lacasa_delarbolpuyo@yahoo.es, or by phoning 032885611 or 098040379.
