Rockland Harbor: For Real Sailors

Rockland Harbor is one of the favorites for sailing and setting dock at their marina and moorings, with a very helpful harbor master. It is a well-protected harbor and preferred by many sailors and boaters: even on a rough, windy day you can have a safe sail. I happened to be able to sail on my brother's boat the "Chance Along," but you can get a wonderful tour on the "Morning In Maine" schooner that does sail out of Rockland Harbor. The day I was there, the major schooners of the Maine coast were having a parade, and it was an amazing sight, as you will see in the photographs.

Rockland Harbor is of course in Rockland Maine, which is on Route 1 after you go through Thomaston, a gorgeous seaside village that displays many captain's grand houses.

Rockland still has its quaintness, even though it is becoming more tourist-oriented with many nice shops and restaurants. The "Second Read" is a well-known coffeehouse that is also a secondhand book store. They have poetry readings at certain times. They also have a great "art store" near the well-known Tenant's Harbor Wyeth Family.

Rockland Harbor

Rockland, Maine, is one of the few coastal towns that does not have an over run feeling of tourist (unless it is Lobster Festival week). The harbor is one of the best Maine has to offer, deep and well protected, a great harbor master and facilities. It is host to many famous schooners and multi-masked sailing vessels, including "Morning in Maine" which offers daily tour sails for the boat lover. Even a novice sailor will love this harbor which is large enough to allow him to sail yet still take refuge in it's protective arms, the more advanced sailor will sail out further and catch some great winds that are known in the Penobscot Bay.

Rockland itself is a small coastal town that has one of the best art galleries in Maine, the Wyeth Museum, that shows the three generations of Maine artists, N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. It also has a large collection of other well known artists. You will find the "Lighthouse Museum and Store" as well, with every kind of lighthouse memorabelia you can find. A collection and operation of several types of "lights" that were once housed in lighthouses up and down the Maine coast.

Rockland also provides many very nice restaurants and cafes, book stores, and unique gift shops. One thing to remember, you cannot remove a rock from it's shoreline, it is against the law. A law needed to preserve it's name sake of "rock land".
