What neighboring Pismo Beach does for the 50s, Avila Beach does for the new millennium. New construction is underway, bringing new lodging, restaurants and a reopening of the historic Avila Beach Grocery and Deli. It is an exciting time for this small beach town nestled in the south facing end of San Luis Bay. Families and groups flock to the town on weekends. During the week, the beach is deserted in the mornings due to the fog. The sun breaks about noon and makes for a beautiful afternoon.
Swings, picnic tables, kayak rentals, and the pier make any day enjoyable. A basketball court and grassy area with more picnic tables sit next to the sand. The beach is comfortable for swimming or sunbathing. There isn’t much wind. If you don’t bring your own food, the Deli is across the main street from the pier. There are usually hot dog vendors as well. The Custom House Restaurant is a pricey alternative.
Directions: Off US101, exit at Avila Beach Rd./Port San Luis from both North and Southbound lanes. Go about 3 miles.
