Las Vegas Welcome Sign a Piece of History

I can remember the first time I ever saw this sign it was 14 years ago and I was really dissapointed with what I saw. I was shocked to see it was really in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip with nothing around it. There was really no way to get close to it to take any pictures. You could run across the street fearing being run down by a fast moving car to get a good picture. I never did get my picture taken next to the sign for fear of ruining a good time by being hit by a careless cab driver.

As the years went by they really started to spend money on the strip. Hotels like Mandalay bay and the Luxor were built giving reason to make the strip pretty even closer to the sign. Then some one had an idea to make the sign a tourist attraction.

Now you can pull over and park in a nice little parking lot next to the sign. Get out stretch your legs and take a nice little walk around the sign. There is grass that is by it that is forever green and it really adds to the wonderfulness of the whole place. To think how many other people have stood where you are getting their pictures taken. How many movies have shown the sign either at the begining, middle or end. As you stand there an you realize your have just touched history you start to plan your next trip out to the city that never sleeps.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

About a half mile south of Mandalay Bay, this iconic sign is a favorite photo spot of tourists. We took the monorail from the Flamingo station to the MGM station, then walked over to the Excalibur. We then took the tram to Mandalay Bay. We weren't sure exactly how much farther south we would have to walk, but found that it was a lot less than we had feared. While there, we noticed that people were parking in a nearby parking lot (on the east side of LVB), and one gentleman even took a taxi there.

The sign is on a gravel median in the center of Las Vegas Blvd., but the area right around the sign is covered in astroturf which looks much nicer when photographed. We took our pictures, as well as snapping some photos for a few other folks, and then decided to head back up the strip. A block or so north of the sign there is a bus stop for the Deuce Bus...$2 and we were on our way back to the action on the strip.

Gambling:

Husband and I enjoy playing together at the $3 craps tables at Casino Royale and the Westin $1 table.

I tried the huge penny WOF machine in the Flamingo but lost about $40, so quit.

I enjoyed sic bo at NYNY—did not find that game anywhere else, I just love to play it—went up and down and finally cashed out only $2 down.

Roulette at Westin—think I finally cashed out about $5 up—played a long time on $20 for the 25 cent roulette.

As you can see, I am a cheap gambler!!!

Husband’s craps:

B Coast: Husband had good luck and met some great guys to play craps with each morning at Barbary Coast—they had fun on several mornings, meeting up at 10am. Husband had signed up for a 2-hour lesson on dice throwing before we left. It was taught by Beau Parker (has written a book & website is dicecoach.com) and is now retired. He picked up my husband and took him to his home for the lesson—met his wife and learned a lot about stats and throwing dice. Hubby had a great time there and thought it was worth every penny.

TI: He enjoyed the tables at TI the best...as recommended by Beau.

Luxor: He enjoyed the dealers here the best—said they were very friendly and did not hassle the players as at some casinos...has had this same experience with friendly dealers here in past years.

C Royale: The pit boss was a jerk—did not get his name—but he is the short, older one and he liked to harass my husband when he saw he sets the dice, just trying to break his concentration. But we still enjoy playing there since it is so cheap and I refuse to play anything above $3!!!

I enjoy watching him play at the higher limit tables. This trip I was mainly with our friends mid-morning while hubby played craps since they preferred to sightsee—and that was fine with me—I knew ahead of time and had planned accordingly.

Sam’s Town: Went here on our "rental car" day just to check it out since Bo likes to play here...did not win anything; our friends were with us and we did not want to spend all day here since they do not gamble.

Overall he did leave a few hundred in Vegas—he would be up and down—but loved it. I think he was too intent on practicing his dice throwing technique this trip instead of just playing—the past few trips he has always left at least $1,000 ahead.
