Life in an 18th Century Famine Village

We were provided roughly 45 minutes to explore the village, or if preferred, skip the village and visit at the adjacent Red Fox Inn for an old fashioned Irish Coffee or perhaps a scone and tea.

There are four thatch roof houses plus a couple of other buildings that make up the village. One of the houses was actually taken from elsewhere in County Kerry and then reassembled here. The others were built as exact reproductions of real houses found in this area during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Most all furnishings are antiques original to that period. Life-size figures are used throughout to tell the story of what it was like back then. Those involved in this project are proud of the amount of research and attention to detail that went in to making this a real a portrayal of life in Ireland as possible.

The houses were small and typically multi-functional. One such example was the home of Phil McGillycuddy. One half of the dwelling was his living area while the other was for his animals (typically cows or ponies).

Speaking of ponies, they did have several of the near extinct Kerry Bog Ponies. One of them was in labor, expecting to delivery a foal at any moment. Unfortunately, that did not happen during our visit.

The local turf cutter of the time was Jeremiah Mulvihill. He was also the founder of this village. Outside of his house was a stack of peat that had been cut from the bogs to be used for heat in the stoves. As we later learned from personal experience, peat does not give off much heat so it would take a lot of it to make it through a winter.

After viewing the various and unique buildings, there is a decent gift shop where a number of items may be purchased at what seemed to be relatively fair prices. Public restrooms are also available here.

The Kerry Bog Village was a wonderful stop along our Ring of Kerry tour. I would encourage anyone making the trip as a self-driving tour to consider a stop here to learn more about how the Irish people lived and worked together. We felt it was definitely worth the €5 admission fee. NOTE: According to their website (www.kerrybogvillage.ie) their admission price is €6 so I'm assuming organized tour groups receive a discount.
