Description
Hamdeok Beach is considered by many to be one of the finest beaches on the island of Jeju. Since Jeju is a volcanic island, there are plenty of lava rocks and unusual natural formations. The beach has free parking about a block away. There are luxury hotels, restaurants, tube rentals, shower facilities, and free shelters readily available.
~~ We had as our headquarters an open-air cafe/bar which provided seating, lockers, and shelter from the sun. The cafe was directly on the water, and served snacks, soft drinks, beer, and even simple hot foods like ramen and rice. Best of all, they had a snow cone machine (which meant free shaved ice without syrup--one of my favorite treats) and a freezer full of ice cream bars. The oceanfront vendors do tend to price gouge--prepare to pay double the going rate for your snacks. But when it's 96 degrees out, $2 seems like a bargain for 10 oz. of ice cold soda!
~~ The water surrounding Hamdeok tended to be cold, even when the weather was sweltering. We visited in August and had to be sure the jellyfish weren't running beforehand. You can probably ask the locals about this. Be sure and wear shoes anyway--the rocks are quite sharp and there is always the possibility of glass.
~~ Be sure and bring a camera! The combination of sky, sun, water, and mountains all around makes for great photo opportunities. Jeju's water has been compared to Hawaii and Bermuda because of its intense turquoise blue color, and the scenery is truly magnificent!
