White Sands Beach

As you drive along Alii Drive (headed towards Keauhou) in Kailua-Kona you will see a short stretch of white sand beach on the makai side (ocean side) of the road. The beach is located right after the Kona Magic Sands, a small beachside condo. It is also very near mile marker 4 on Alii Drive. It is known by Magic Sands; Disappearing Sands and La'aloa Bay Beach. It is sometimes referred to as "Magic Sands" because the sand magically appears during the summer months when the surf calms down and visitors and locals flock to this beach to boogie board and bodysurf. During the winter months when the surf gets high, the waves pound into shore bringing large rocks and seaweed up to shore. The pounding waves cover most of the white sand and the beach reverts into a small rocky bay. When the surf gets really high, the entire white sand beach disappears. This is when the boogie boarders come out to play in their playground. I would only recommend swimming at this beach during the summer months when the waves are small and manageable. Besides swimming and body surfing, this beach is great for snorkeling. It is great for kids during the summer because this beach is small, the sand is beautiful and there is a lifeguard on duty. Note that there is no large parking lot so it can get congested on the side of the road near this beach during the summer months. DO NOT SWIM AT THIS BEACH DURING HIGH SURF!
