A Day hike in the Chisos Mountains.

Emory Peak the pride and joy of Big Bend National Park was my first taste of the natural beauty of the Chisos Mountains. I am captivated by the panoramic view I was given when I reached the top of the summit. Not only can you see the Rio Grande River winding through the Chihuahua Desert way below, you can also look far into Mexico. The last 25 feet to the top are the most exciting. You have to climb a sheer rock wall to reap the rewards of your day hike. Simply Amazing. A fun and rewarding hike that I will do again.

The climb to the summit of Emory Peak is 7825 feet, also the highest point in Big Bend and one of the highest in Texas. This hike is a nine mile roundtrip starting at the Basin Trailhead. The hike takes most hikers approximately 5-6 hours for the roundtrip journey so bring enough water. Be sure to check with at the Visitor Information Center on the current weather conditions.

How to get to Emory Peak:

Starting from the Basin Trailhead take the Pinnacles trail for 3.5 miles. From this point the one mile to the summit cuts off and heads to the most rewarding view you can get on the way up. If you liked this hike remember Big Bend has over 800,000 acres to explore from one of the 200 miles of hiking trails to the 150 miles of dirt roads. Have fun and reward yourself with this beautiful country.
