The beach is beautiful. There really isn't any open sand where you can set up a towel though. To rent a chair, it costs an average of 4 Euros (about $5), and the chairs differ depending on the restaurant that owns them, which rents them out. Some of the restaurants offer free beach chairs in hopes you will come into the restaurant or order service to your chair. Try to get to the beach early in high season (mid - July - August) so you can pick out a good chair. Some of them have umbrellas to shade from the sun.
The beach has beautiful sand all the way out, and the scenery is great. The water is a crystal blue colour, and is the perfect temperature for swimming in. Platys Gialos beach is in a bay, so there are rarely any waves. The beach is the most family friendly beach on the island, but you can still spot a few nudies! The beachfront restaurants and bars have great cool beverages - try the Greek "Nescafe" which is a strong iced coffee (ask for sugar!). Enjoy your time on the beach!
