Description: After six days of straight rain, the weather in Eindhoven was finally getting to me. I no longer felt like going shopping or exploring new restaurants- the looming gray skies made me feel like curling up with a book in one of the great terry robes supplied by my hotel. My friend and travel companion however, could not be satisfied by staying in any night we were in Eindhoven. What to do in this dismal weather? Why the Pathe! My friend exclaimed.
The Pathe is Eindhoven's largest commercial movie theatre. Here they get many releases only mere weeks after the American release date. For the most part these movies are subtitled in Dutch- but with the soundtrack still in English. This is the perfect activity for Americans, other English-speaking people, and Dutch natives alike who are stuck in Eindhoven for long periods of inclimate weather.
The Pathe's selections are limited to whatever the American production companies release overseas, but you can bet that most blockbusters will make an appearance here. During my visit they had three different movies showing which had recently been released back in the states. I was surprised how quickly these films had made their way to Holland and had been subtitled in Dutch.
The Pathe itself is a very nice venue to watch movies in. They have all the amenities of modern American theatres- comfortable seating, surround sound, snack kiosks, etc. The prices for movie tickets were about the same as they were back in the states.
The best part about the Pathe is the selection of snacks and refreshments available for your consumption during the movie. They had a large display with bins of gourmet Dutch gummy candy and licorice that customers can scoop out and pay for by the weight. These candies were much better in quality than anything you would find at a typical American theatre. Then there were the beverage options- you could get a large frosty mug of beer to enjoy during your movie. I could think of nothing more perfect!
The Pathe was a great way for us homesick Americans to catch up on movies we hadn't seen and get out of the hotel during days of bad weather. I would highly recommend it if your other sightseeing tours have been put on hold because of rain, or if you're in Holland for an extended period of time and want to experience the full Dutch version of entertainment.
