It doesn't matter if you have a fascination with the Army or the Native Americans, you will find something of interest at this small park and cemetery.

Our initial reason for finding this National Park was my love's love for the "taming of the west." Anything that has to do with the western expansion around the latter end of the 1800's to the mid 1900's catches his attention and I am happy to go along since I enjoy the museums (although I am not as happy trekking through the fields as he is).

The little museum has much to offer in way of explanation of the people of the times. Period clothing and personal articles are on display along with a 3 dimensional landscape of the area. The rangers give periodic lectures under the back portico. They point out the pertinent areas and explain the importance of each in a way that even children can understand. Questions are answered as they arise from the audience and further questioning can take place after the lecture. Be sure to take the weather into account when attending these free lectures, the wind blows just about all the time and it can be a bit cooler in the shade of the porch than it is in the sun.

You can take a free walking tour of the grounds (maps are available). Trails are marked and there are markers along the way that explain what occurred in that area. Along the way you will spy small "poles" in the fields, they are marking the places where bodies were found (both soldiers and natives).

There is a bus tour that runs every few hours. It will take you to the other side of the park where Reno's forces were encamped. The guide explains the logistics of the battle - in much the same way that the ranger did - while you travel the rolling hills.

The cemetery area up on the hill behind the museum is set up the way it was originally done. It is no longer holding the remains of Custer or his forces other than the "unknown" remains interred beneath a large pillar. Instead, the remains have been reinterred into a more formal cemetery below the museum (Custer has been reinterred at West Point and his officers have been reinterred in their home states for the most part.) The newer cemetery contains remains from all the wars that the US has been in. It is a national cemetery and the proper respect is shown to those who lie there.

This is a great stop for history buffs and it only takes a few hours out of your travelling time. There is even a snack bar just outside the park boundaries, so you can use the time to stretch your legs and learn something at the same time! Close
