Unless you have a membership at an exclusive club, you'll likely be playing at the courts of your hotel or condo complex or using the public courts (the ones at Ruth Hardy Park are, I concede, in great shape compared to the ones we have back home in Vancouver). But if you find yourself stuck for partners (or lessons or a ball machine or even a racquet), then head to the Plaza Racquet Club.
The Plaza is a laid-back little club with nine lit courts and great views of the San Jacinto Mountains. For a paltry $50 you can get a week-long membership, which entitles you to unlimited court time and reduced rates on lessons and ball machine use. (You can also book courts or take lessons without a membership, of course.) There's a small indoor lounge and pro shop and a lovely, shaded terrace with tables and chairs. The best part is that Kurt and Anna, the wonderfully warm owners, will arrange matches for you with locals or other visitors. Kurt is also a fantastic coach/instructor (for both advanced players, like my partner, and relative beginners, like me), and there's a ball machine to practice.
