Devil's Millhopper

Devil's Millhopper is a large sinkhole with beautiful lush scenery to take in while exercising. There are streams that create music as they trickle down the steep walls. At the base there is a pool of water with algae growing on the top. Ferns and other foliage cover the sides of the hole leaving a green canvas. The temperature as you progress to the bottom of the sinkhole drops slightly cooler than at the top. There is also a trail that goes through the woods around the sinkhole. Beware doing this hike in the middle of summer because if the heat doesn't get you, the mosquitoes will!

Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park

Devils Millhopper Geological State Park is a 63-acre park with a picnic area and a couple of trails. The main feature of the park is a huge sinkhole—about 120 feet deep and 500 feet across—filled with lush vegetation and small streams and waterfalls, which can be viewed from a boardwalk that descends to the bottom. There is also a trail that runs around the rim of the sinkhole.

This is a beautiful place to visit, but it’s best to avoid going during the summer months, as the heat can become unbearable down in the sink. The best time to visit is on a weekday when there are not many other people around—it’s wonderfully relaxing to just sit on one of the benches surrounded by the sound of birds and trickling water.

The park is open from 9am to 5pm. Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday). Guided ranger walks are available Saturdays at 10am.
