Avila is a tranquil beach located on California's beautiful central coast. The beach plays host to hundreds of families, college students, couples, and many other people on a daily basis. Since the beach is very wide, it never seems overly crowded, but there is always an activity going on. The sand is fairly smooth and shells are plentiful near the water. As with all central coast beaches, the water is fairly cold and the beach tends to be breezy, so plan accordingly.Avila is one of my favorite local beaches beacuse there are tidepools and coves at the far end (turn left as you come up to the beach from the parking area, walk under the pier, and keep hiking, you will need to wade through some tide to get to these secluded areas). When the tide is low you can often find beautiful shells, sand dollars, and kelp resting on the sand. To get to the beach take 101 South from SLO and exit at Port San Luis/Avila Beach, turn right when you get off the exit ramp. Follow the signs to Avila Beach. Also, if you continue past the main beach (where the Avila Lighthouse Hotel is) you will eventually reach another smaller beach where bonfires are often held. Keep driving to the end of the road and you will hit the Avila pier where you can buy fresh fish, go on a fishing trip, eat at a pier restaurant, and watch the sealions play.
