Description: The last U.S. Census said that approximately 30% of the residents of Plainsboro are of Asian descent. Thus, it makes sense that of the two supermarkets in the town, one is a huge Asian market.
The anchor of the Princeton Meadows strip mall, the Asian Food Market has all types of fresh and packaged foods from China, Japan, Thailand, and India, as well as typical American staples.
Highlights of the market include:
1)Produce--tons of fresh produce at half the price you'd find in the local supermarkets. All sorts of apples and oranges are available, but so are fresh bok choy, bean sprouts, snap pea pods, durians, tamarinds, kumquats, lychees and various other Asian produce I don't recognize.
2)Fish and meat--this section is highlighted by the counter-long tank with live fish awaiting purchase.
3)Noodles--every kind of noodle you could possibly imagine.
4)Packaged noodle soups--this is NOT just ramen. Honestly, there are well over 100 different varieties of packaged noodles with powdered soup mix. A college student could eat one of these every day in the semester and never have the same one twice!
5)Rice--prepare for a workout, as there are no small bags here. I think the smallest I've bought is 5 pounds--the largest ones I definitely can't lift.
6) Prepared foods--get your Chinese buffet-type food already made and pay by the pound.
7) Refrigerated/frozen--this is a large section with dozens of types of dumplings, frozen desserts, etc.
8) Cookware--pick up some beautiful ceramic sushi plates while you're here.
Lines can be long here on weekends, but the cashiers are amazingly efficient. The store closes at 8 or 8:30pm depending on the day of the week.
