Description: The Olympic Stadium in Barcelona
The second day we were in Barcelona we wanted to see the Montjuic Hill. This hill is located just outside the city center and it was larger then we expected it to be. There is quite a lot to do on this hill as the Montjuic Castle where you can enjoy a beautiful view over the city but also the Olympic Stadium.
The Montjuic hill can be reach by several ways as taking the metro, bus and the taxi. What you should keep in mind is that when you take the bus or taxi you still have to walk a bit. The Olympic stadium isn’t that far and is actually part of a whole Olympic complex. At this complex you can find all the buildings that were used during the Olympics as the large swimming pool which was used during a music video of Kyle Minogue. Unfortunately we were not allowed to center.
The Olympic stadium is the main building of the complex and before the building you have a large square with beautiful fountains. Not to miss is the large Montjuic Communications tower which is very impressive to look at and can be seen from all over town.
The Olympic stadium was originally built in 1927 as Barcelona wanted to get the Olympic games of 1936 but didn’t manage to get it. The whole stadium was renovated in 1989 for the Olympic games of 1992. During the Olympics the stadium offered seats for over 60.000 people but now it offers seats for 55.000 people. Today the stadium is of course still used for sports but also for concerts were artists like Bon Jovi and U2 have played.
The building is very impressive and is built in the Neo Classical style. Inside is very impressive and you get a good view of how big the stadium really is. A big plus is that the entrance is free and you can wander around a bit but you can’t access the field itself. There is a little restaurant were you can enjoy some snacks and drinks. There isn’t really that much to do and after spending around 15 minutes inside we had seen it all. There is some information hanging about the major sport events and of course the Olympics. You can’t really access any other areas so you can only watch the main field.
When visiting the Montjuic hill i think the olympic stadium is worth to have a look especially since the whole complex is very impressive. I’m not really a sport fan so I wouldn’t go here just to finish the stadium since there isn’t really that much to see or do. The building itself is impressive and especially from the outside it looks beautiful but after spending 15 minutes we had seen it all.
Since the entrance was free i can only really give five stars.
