Les Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac

About 15km north of Sarlat, is a classic French garden, rated 3 stars by the Michelin Green Guide. Long in the estate of one family, the gardens were created in the 18th century to an Italian design. Later, owners altered the gardens to reflect English fashion. In the last half century, the property has returned to continental style with stylized shrubs, hedges, and lawns creating many formal spaces within the property. Little emphasis is placed on flowering plants. Today's mature garden reflects the original Italian design.

Now a national monument, the site is open for guided tours. During our visit, a small group was conducted through the gardens, with explanations entirely in French. We were provided with a few sheets of information written in English that described the property and its history. We had intended to enjoy lunch at Cote Jardin but the on-site restaurant closed in mid-afternoon, despite the large number of visitors at the gardens.

Entrance fee was €8 for each adult. We might have preferred being able to wander through the garden without an escort, at a pace we chose, but the beauty of the site made this a worthwhile visit.
