Casco Bay

One of the best things about being in Portland is the opportunity to take a ferry tour around the beautiful islands in Casco Bay.

Casco Bay Ferry Terminal is at the very end of Franklin Street, which you can get to off the 295 highway. It meets with Commercial Street on the Portland waterfront. There is a multilayer parking lot for $12 an hour or by the day. Or you can try to find another parking space if you are lucky. It usually costs about $8, adult price, for a ferry ticket, and you can get on and off the island without a ticket, but once you come off the ferry in Portland, your run is over.

The midday ferry, called the "mail" boat, is the best ride. As you tour, the captain of the ferry will give you a tour and explain all the places and islands of interest. They usually stop at Little Diamond, Great Diamond, Diamond Estates, Long Island, Cheabeage Island, and Cliff Island, dropping off and picking up passengers along the way.

The ferry is huge, with different decks and inside heated quarters for the bad weather runs. Island life is busy, as lots of people live and work on the different islands and the high-school kids take the ferry into Portland for school each day.

Don't miss this tour--it is very nice, with so much to see.
