Good Friday in Valletta - Faith and Tradition...

Well, The Good Friday procession in Valletta is one of the oldest on the island.
Being the capital of the island since the times of Grand Master Jean P de La Vallette, Valletta was pioneer in the Holy week processions. After starting the very first prosession in Rabat (Malta), the Fransiscan friars of our Lady of Jesus, brought this tradition also to Valletta when they themselves moved to the new Capital.
Now a days the Procession in Valletta boasts some of the oldest and most prestigious statues one can find localy, and these make part of the traditional set of statues, something that is lost in most other villages.
The Banda Filarmonika Nazzjonali La Vallette, accompanies the "Vara l;- Kbira" the statue raffigurating the death of Christ on the cross, in a unique manner that from a distance, seams as if it is floating along with the statue itself.
If you happen to be here around Easter, don't miss it...

This is one day that you really need to take a tour because nearly every shop and bus stops running.

There are large numbers of processions in Malta, and many of the best are in the smallest villages. However, there is normally also one in Valletta.

Be warned that these processions take hours and can be a bit much for a small child.
