Camping for the weekend on Fraser Island was an absolute blast. With a total of 18 of me and my friends, we headed out in two 4x4s on a ferry for the largest sand island in the world. There are several tour companies that will take you on the island and provide all that you need, but we decided to rent two 4-wheel drive vehicles to pile us and our stuff into. Seeing as the island is sand, do plan on getting your vehicle stuck. A good idea is to have some strong muscles around to be able to push the beast of a truck out of the sinking sand. It is amazing what we managed to get out of.
The beauty of being in charge of your own tour and not having to be guided is that we could drive to where we wanted to go when we wanted to go. Whether it was visiting the Mahino Shipwreck, floating down the natural lazy river, or swimming in lake Makenzie, which I might add is the most beautiful lake I have ever seen, we were in complete control of our itinerary. This is great if you wanted to spend more time at a certain spot.
The giant sand dunes and freshwater lakes made this island adventure worth the trip a thousand times over. One more note, watch out for the dingos! Make sure you don't feed them and keep your coolers in your vehicle's overnight. A word to the wise, place coolers of food in truck before getting drunk to avoid the 4am wake up to dingos scavenging through your campsite. With many different ways to experience this island available I would highly recommend renting your own vehicle and camping equipment for the weekend. Enjoy the bumpy roads, sand-filled everything, incredible beauty, and great fun!
