A must see while visiting Topeka is the state capitol building. It is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and the admission is free.
You will be able to see the Senate, House of Reps, and the Supreme Courts. There is a library and a capitol store.
There are even capitol guided tours that will take you to the dome up 296 steps with no elevator, so be prepared. If you make it up all the stairs you may purchase a T-shirt that states "I climbed 296 steps today, what did you do?" The massive amounts of steps will reward you with a view of the city that you will not soon forget. Since tour times change during the year, visit the website at www.kshs.org/places/capitol/dome_tour
You will also see the John Steuart Curry murals lining the interior of the capitol's second floor. These murals have been stated to be quite controversial with their war themes such as anti-slavery and the Civil War.
Just walking the grounds and interior you will find statues of Kansans and famous people. A trip here is special because you get to learn about Kansas history as well as brush up on your American law making and court systems.
