Kennicott and McCarthy

Kennicott is mostly a ghost town, although they do have a hotel. The best thing to do is spend the day exploring. Look inside abandoned houses and gawk at the huge copper mill. Guided tours are available and very interesting. We took a fascinating tour of the power plant that provided the mining town with electricity. There is also a walking trail that takes you to a view of a glacier.McCarthy is a short distance from Kennicott and a quaint Alaska town of, oh, about 50 people? The hotel at Kennicott was booked so we stayed at Ma Johnson's Hotel, a restored boarding house from the "old days". There is a very interesting museum inside of an old train car that tells the history of the town.
