Description: The Pana‘ewa Rainforest Zoo is a small zoo located just outside of Hilo on the Big Island. One of the main features of the zoo is the beautiful tropical backdrop in which it is set. As you walk through the grounds it is obvious that great care is taken in maintaining the wide variety of tropical plants that line the scenic pathways of the zoo. In addition to the attractive vegetation, the zoo is also host to a number of mammal, bird and reptile species. The Pana‘ewa Rainforest Zoo is primarily made up of small to mid-sized animals and includes species such as the red tegu lizard, pygmy hippo, ringed tail lemur and kinkajou. An exception to the rule is the zoo’s gorgeous white Bengal tiger, Namaste. Namaste is hands down the main attraction at the zoo and his presence is undeniably majestic.
Tips:
* If you are staying in Hilo or planning a day trip to the area, a visit to the Pana‘ewa Rainforest Zoo is certainly worthwhile. However, we would not recommend going out of your way to visit the zoo. The zoo is quite small and in general, it will take most people no more than an hour to walk the grounds.
*When planning your trip to the Pana‘ewa Rainforest Zoo keep in mind that the zoo does not open very late. Regular zoo hours are 9 am to 4 pm daily.
*Admission to the zoo is free but donations are welcomed.
