Swimming with sea lions

The Galapagos is known as one of the premier scuba spots of the world. But even if you are not a diver, you can enjoy the underwater world on a snorkelling trip.

We snorkelled at a couple of islands, such as the Devils Crown, which is a submerged volcano close to Floreana Island. The current here is quite strong, but it carries you around (not away from) the crown, after which you can enter inside. We saw a couple of Galapagos sharks here.

For beginners, Santa Fe Island has a beautiful sheltered bay with fine white sand and almost no current. Try to get close to the rocks (watch out, though, don't touch; there are sea urchins), where most of the animals (especially sea lions) swim. We also saw a marine iguana underwater here.

Lastly, Bartolome Island (known more for its volcanic landscape and the landmark Pinnacle Rock) and Gardner Bay at Isla Espanola make fine swimming spots.

We were lucky, but I understand the water can sometimes be quite cold, so bring (or hire) a (shortie) wetsuit.
