Life in the City

Bursa's economic wealth rested to a considerable extend on agriculture-vine and fruit growing, dairy products, and on the olive production of Gemlik and Mudanya. The large quantity of mulberry trees also made Bursa an ideal centre for silk production.Bursa was the main textile manufacturing centre of Ottoman Empire and fabrics were celebrated far beyond the borders of the Ottoman Empire. They were exported as far afield as China, and filled the markets of Hungary, Poland, Italy, and the Balkan countries. Bursa has many baths and hot springs, and became one of the most important spas of the Byzantine period, and over the centuries people have come from far and wide to bathe in this hot mineral water.
