Emancipation Memorial

Description

Masterfully sculpted by well-known local artist Karl Boodhagen, this monument commemorates the 1838 slave uprising which preceded the abolition of slavery. The large and inspiring figure is of Bussa, the leader of the revolt. With once-bonded hands raised in freedom, the artist has captured the emotion of the most important moment in Bajan history. The statue is located just outside of Bridgetown looking over a cane field where slaves once toiled.
