Particularly for first time visitors it’s a good idea to visit the museum website to learn about the current exhibition. Also, it will alert you to the two-week period between exhibitions when most if not all the galleries are closed. The museum features three exhibitions per year all featuring O’Keeffe and her fellow American Modernists contemporaries. If you are or become a true fan of O’Keeffe one visit will not be enough.
While the museum is small, a total of nine galleries, suggest planning on spending at least an hour for touring the galleries. Additionally, a 12-video about O’Keeffe’s life narrated by Gene Hackman and a shorter video produced for the current exhibition run back-to-back continuously throughout the day beginning at 10 a.m. when the museum opens. Save time to visit the museum’s gift shop.
Full admission is equal to that of a movie (matinees in most parts of the US) with discounts for seniors, students and residents of New Mexico. Youth 18 and under get in free. Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the museum is free to all. The museum provides a children’s book about Georgia O’Keeffe to help youngsters learn and enjoy their experience.
A great way to experience the museum is to join a docent led tour. They are held daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2 or 2:30 p.m. There is also a docent-led tour on Friday evenings beginning at 5:15 or 5:30 p.m.
There is indoor public parking a couple blocks in either direction from the museum. On-street parking is limited to two-hours before you have to feed the meter. Note: on-street parking is free on Sunday.
This is the only museum on the planet dedicated to a single artist of international stature who is a woman. It’s a treasure with a collection of more than 3,000 of works in the collection and 1,149 paintings, drawings, and sculptures by O'Keeffe, the Museum's holdings represent the largest repository of her work available to the public in a single institution. Subjects range from the artist's iconic flowers and bleached desert skulls to nudes, landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, and abstractions, dating from 1901 to 1984.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center is the only center in the U.S. dedicated to the study of American Modernism.
It's no wonder this is most visited museum in New Mexico.

I was so pleasantly surprised with this lovely museum. I knew little about her, and her work, before entering. I came away feeling very glad to have made the effort. The museum offers a 15 minute introductory movie with her biography, while highlighting many of her works. It is the perfect start to the tour. The museum is relatively small, so it can be enjoyed in as little as 20 minutes, or you can linger for a longer time. Her use of color is stunning, and her watercolors are magnificent. A nice touch to the museum is that they offer, complimentary, secured lockers where you are encouraged to store your personal belongings during your stay. This makes for a more comfortable and relaxing visit! A lovely gift shop is available with a variety of books, post cards, and gifts related to her art.

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is one of my favorite places to visit. The displays are always changing so it is never the same museum twice. The orientation movie is a good starting point and gives an overview of the artist's life so that you can better understand her art. In her own voice you hear her tell viewers not to read too much into her work. She would simply see shapes and colors she liked and painted them.
The museum is fairly small and you can be done in about 1 to 1.5 hours.

The Georgia O'Keefe musuem contains the largest collection of O'Keefes in the world--more than 80 works. Very few are the popular oil paintings she is most known for. A large amount are wood cuts she made while studying her trade. Some of her most famous works can be seen here like Jimson Weed. Other artists are represented as well--her mentor and her husband. You can watch a short film of her describing why she created her artwork. Don't bother with the gift shop. They don't have a big selection. You can find what you are looking for at the shops throughout downtown.
