Description
Where once the Barra Fort stood guard over the mouth of the inner harbour, the Gate of Understanding now celebrates Sino-Portuguese friendship. Designed by Charters de Almeida, the 40-meter tall structure is made of a concrete core clad in black granite slabs. Do not stand too close though, as some slabs have come hurtling down in the past! Although this giant monolith has been standing since 1992, the road that runs right past it is as yet unnamed, so for a closer look and photo opportunities, it is easiest just to head for the Avenida da República.
