Budavári Sikló: funicular

Located in Buda, just off of the river and the Széchenyi lánchíd (Chain Bridge,) you will find the Budavári Sikló (funicular) that will take you from Clark Ádám Tér up the steep hill to Szent György Tér near the Royal Palace in the Castle District (Várhegy) perched high above the Danube.

Originally opened in 1870, it provided local workers with cheap transportation. The two little cars that ride up and down are replicas, as the originals were destroyed by the Germans in 1945. They were not fully restored until 1986.

Today's replica carriages, which use electricity rather than steam power, complete the steep ascent in less than one minute. The quiet cars contrast strikingly with the hustle-and- bustle and throngs of people elsewhere in the city.

No other tickets are valid except tickets purchased at the funicular (that means Budapest cards and train/tram tickets are not accepted as tender). Queues can be long, but moved rather quickly the day we visited. There is a small vendor area with water, postcards, etc. Be prepared to pay quite a bit for anything you buy there. We were really thirsty so we bought a bottle of water and savoured every last drop for the price.

The funicular is a quick alternative to climbing the hill on foot. It is open from 7:30am to 10:00pm. It costs 650 Forint (US$3) to go up, 550 Forint to go down and 350 Forint for children. (February 2006 1 US$ = ~211 Forint).

This is a short 2-minute tram ride up or down the side of the hill, between the foot of Chain Bridge, and to the entrance of the Royal Palace. There's three sections in the tram--top, middle, and bottom--to enter and ride. I suggest riding it up the hill and walking down from the Royal Palace.

Hours: 7:30am to 10pm, closed every even Monday
