For 10 years of Vegas Trips we always stayed on the Strip....but decided to stay Downtown this trip. Stayed at the Golden Nugget...excelllent choice...The Shark tank Pool and slide was amazing. Great tanning areas and A Must to try The Spa.
Enjoy Vegas for Cheaper.......................
On Fremont Street..The people are much friendlier, Better Service, Food Was Cheaper, Drinks Stronger and Cheaper, Great Comedy Shows (Cheaper), Great Live Entertainment on the Street and WOW the Live Lighting Experience is amazing. Well done,
Had a great Time and we are planning on returning real soon and will stay no where else but Downtown from Now On.
Free Live Bands (and more) on Fremont St.
On a budget? Blow all of your cash at the Blackjack table? Looking for something to do? I highly recommend the free live bands on Fremont St.
The bands and genres change most days of the week, the talent is there (as well as the Vegas showmanship) On the weekend evenings there are usually two bands playing simultaneously on two main stages.
Lots of dancing, from the "just 21's" to the street folks. It's a grand old time.
Don't miss the Riders of the Thunderdome (free motosports show), the Viva Vision shows (the worlds largest tv) ... and keep your eyes peeled for the 99 cent fried twinkies, fried Oreos, shrimp cocktails and, of course, the 99 cent margaritas!

A nice little area in the old downtown Vegas. But has its only appeal and a necessary place to visit for first timers to Vegas. Fremont street is actually a walkway area that is home to one of the biggest light shows canopies in the US and stretches several blocks. The light show goes every hour and is open to the public and has Las Vegas themes to it. It is quite interesting to see... the first time but after a while it gets a little annoying since everything on Fremont Street stops during these shows. But it is cool no the less.
It is also home to several casinos and hotels (Fitzgeralds and, Binion for a few examples). These smaller casinos tend to have lower house edges on the slot and video poker machines and also have the standard table games. There are also several casinos that server novelty drinks like those big yard-o-daiquiris, and football cups filled with beer. All at pretty decent rates and prices.
Some of the other aspect add another hint of flavor to the area, like the side walk vendors and artists (the spray can artists are always a crowd favorite). The strip clubs on Fremont are expensive but decent. If you have the ability to travel around Vegas there are several better ones around to be found. Also every now and then there are several special events that take place there. I've been to car/truck shows, and concerts that have taken place there.
Overall it's a good place to see at least once if not several times. A slower pace and a more down to earth everyday feeling than the strip and a good alternative. Prices of the food and hotel rooms in the area along with the looser slots make this place a good choice for the budget minded Vegas Goer.

Before I went to Vegas this picture was what I thought it was all about: neon, flashy, and a bit kitsch. Nothing wrong with that and, of course, there is still that aspect to the city, particularly downtown.
Downtown, in Glitter Gulch, is home to the Vegas Vic sign, an iconic image of Las Vegas, and also the flashing lights of illuminated casino fronts and signs. This is where the first casinos opened and where you’ll find recognisable names such as the Golden Nugget and the Lady Luck.
The area fell into decline during the 1980s and early 1990s as hotel/casino building was concentrated on the Strip; however, since the mid-1990s and the establishment of the Freemont Street Experience in 1995, the Downtown area and Glitter Gulch began to revitalise. Now, especially at night, the area is buzzing with people, entertainers and, of course, neon.
In 1995 Freemont St. was converted into a pedestrian area and covered with a 90-foot-tall "ceiling" of over two million lights. Underneath this you’ll find casinos glittering with neon, stalls selling jewellery and other items, entertainers, rock bands, souvenir shops and, in general, a party-time atmosphere.
Visit at night—when the entertainers are about and the neon is shining—and you’ll also see the sound and light extravaganza. This happens hourly from about 8pm; the casinos and stores turn off their bulbs and the whole of Freemont St. is instead lit up by the two million or so lights of the "ceiling/screen" above your head. On the "ceiling" are a myriad of images on a variety of themes, i.e. Las Vegas Legends or Heartbeat of a Planet.
To be honest I can’t remember any specific images from our visit, (although I seem to remember there may have been an underwater sequence) just the feel of the whole show which held people captivated with its colour and, like a kaleidoscope, its changing shapes. What I do remember though was how bright it was, both during the show and also when all the neon signs are lit. Like daylight rather than night.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink (we went for the Friday Seafood Buffet at the Golden Nugget. Delicious!), casinos if you want another turn of the roulette wheel or spin of the slot machines, and any number of souvenir shops for those poker chip chocolates or fridge magnets. The Freemont Experience is a fab one.

The Fremont Street Experience is definitely something not to be missed. Besides seeing the infamous neon cowboy and girl, you also get a taste of some of the more seedier part of Vegas. The part that is reminiscent of the Sin City of yesteryear. The casinos and nightclubs are much cheaper than on the strip, as is the tourist shops.
Of course, the light show that begins in the evening and runs every hour is the trademark. They change it around a lot, so you get a different experience on each visit. It is well worth the time to go see the whole of Fremont Street on your trip to Vegas!
