If you are looking for a real sailing adventure, then this is it; if you are looking for a romantic sunset cruise, look elsewhere. We decided as a treat for our last night on Maui that we would take this trip, and booked it through the hotel activity desk only about an hour before scheduled departure. They warned us that we would get wet--little did we know exactly how wet we would be. The boat was a World Cup contender in '87, I believe, and had been modified somewhat to accommodate more people. The top of the deck was cut off and replaced with a sunken-down "pit" area with benches going all the way around. We motored out of the harbor and into the tradewinds when they raised the sails and we started to move. Within minutes, I was sitting in a pool of saltwater up to my waist. As soon as the water level showed any sign of receding, we would cut through a swell and a huge wave would come over us and replenish the supply. It was quite windy and got pretty chilly, although the water was warm.
If you are going to do this, I definitely recommend the cruise they do earlier in the afternoon when it may not get so cold. Also, do not bother purchasing the $2 disposable rain slickers they try to sell you--it won't do any good at all. We had a great time, but getting drenched kind of distracted us from the sunset and didn't make for the relaxing sail that we had imagined.
