The Edinburgh zoo was my personal favourite site of the city. You have to allow yourself at least two hours here. I spent three! There is a great selection of animals. My favourites were the penguins, giraffe, zebra’s, the lions, and tigers. However there were many more, such as, reptiles, birds, red pandas, kangaroos, wild hunting dogs, lamas, gorilla’s, monkeys, plus more.

There are also two gift shops on the premises where you can find yourself different stuffed animals and more. The adults and children will both love the gift shop.

This June saw the opening of the new African habitat at the zoo, housing a collection of Painted Dogs (African Hunting Dogs) and birds from the African bush. Improvements to many of the other enclosures, such as the Ring-Tailed Lemurs, are taking place at the moment, to provide a more naturalistic habitat for the animals. A walk-through enclosure with Gentle Lemurs provides an opportunity for close observation of the inquisitive little animals, whilst they get to watch you.

The big cats are a very popular exhibit, and the glass wall of the enclosure means you can really get face to face with fearsome and beautiful predators such as the Eurasian Lynx and the Ocelot. Endangered Asiatic lions and Amur (Siberian) tigers complete the line-up, and form a vital part of a Europe-wide conservation breeding programme.

The sealions are fed at 11am everyday and usually show off to the crowd that gathers round the pool. The Meerkats and Small-Clawed Otters have recently produced a couple of litters of young, which are recommended for ultimate cuteness.

Edinburgh Zoo sits on quite a steep hill, making it quite difficult for those with wheelchairs or baby-buggies to get started. To counter this, a safari truck runs regularly to the top of the hill, allowing you to work backwards through the zoo and avoid the biggest crowds.

Edinburgh Zoo is a great zoo with loads of animals. I have had some great days out there is recent years. It has the biggest penguin enclosure in the UK, with underwater view areas and a bridge through the middle of the pool. Each day there is a "penguin parade" where some penguins walk by the public on a designated route through the zoo. The parade is usually at 1pm and its a good chance to get to see these animals within touching distance.

Built on a hill, the zoo is sectioned into different areas (African Plains, Reptile Houses, etc). You can now get a safari up to the top of the hill and the guide will give you some information about the animals which you pass.

There are large grassy areas throughout the zoo, so it is an ideal place to take a picnic, although there are a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can buy food.

There is an adventure play area for children, which also has seating for adults to relax.

There are three indoor houses in the zoo, reptiles, fish and the monkey house. These are good place to go if the weather should be bad, as you can spend a great time watching the monkeys and gorillas swinging past and grroming each other as well as a variety of snakes, frogs and lizards.

If you can, I would recommend that you go to the zoo on a sunny day, as you will see more animals and invariably have a better time when the sun is shining.

The zoo has Gorillas, Polar Bears, tigers and lions, camels, giraffes and monkeys, as well as a huge range of other animals. Kids especially will enjoy the zoo.

The Edinburgh Zoo, while not huge, houses most popular animal species. The penguins are my favorite but I loved the giraffes and tigers as well. The zoo is on a hill so bring good walking shoes.

Edinburgh Zoo

A scenic zoo full of a great variety of animals. We enjoyed the lions and the penguins. There is a penguin parade everyday at 2:00 (April - Sept). They actually let all the penguins out of their cage and let them march around the zoo. Quite a sight.
