Name of complex houses was named after the mistress of the palace, which stood here, but it burned to the ground - Sophie Amalienborg (Sophie Amalienborg). However, then the royal palaces were not - the four noble courtiers were granted land here, so that they built themselves houses here, the designs meet the king. Their names are palaces to this day - the manager of the royal court Moltke, members of the secret of the royal council and Levetzau Lovenskoldom Baron Brokdorffa. Palaces became a royal residence in 1794, when the fire began to rebuilt Christiansborg, and to this day royal family resides here.

If we consider the palaces clockwise from the entrance to the Frederiksgade, then the historical names of palaces - the current names of the palaces and their inhabitants will last as follows:
• Palace Levetzaus - Palace of Christian VIII - Crown Prince Frederik and his family;
• Palace Brockdorffs - palace of Frederick VIII - Frederick IX, previous monarch;
• Palace Schacks - Palace of Christian IX - Magret II, the ruling queen and her husband Henry;
• Palace Moltkes - Palace of Christian VII - Christian VII.

In the center of the square stands the equestrian statue of King Frederik V of the French sculptor Jacques-Francois-Joseph Saly, who dedicated the monument for about 15 years, painstakingly studying the horses and created a lot of sketches and models. As a result, this monument is considered one of the world's finest equestrian monuments.

Inside the palace there are two unique areas - the Great Hall of the Rococo style, designed Eygtvedom, decorated with wooden carvings of Le Clerc and frescoes Fossati ; and Banquet Hall architect Giardini in the style of Louis XVI - both are considered architectural masterpieces.

The palace was built Levetzau same craftsmen and by the same design as the Palace Moltke, however, means future owners were unequal, and therefore the palace is a bit more modest. Privy Councillor Levetzau died in 1756, but the palace remained the property of the family until 1794, when the palace became the crown prince Frederik and rebuilt it in the style of the French Empire. In 1839, living in the palace of Prince Christian Frederik ascends to the throne as King Christian VIII's palace, and gives its name. King and Queen were patrons of art and the people are very educated, and the mansion became a center of cultural life in Copenhagen, but alas - not for long - until 1848, when the king died. After the death of the Dowager Queen in 1881, the building was used for their needs Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in 1898, drove here Crown Prince Christian (later King Christian X) and Princess Alexandrine, the palace belonged to them until 1947 now living in the mansion of the heir to the Danish throne, Frederick with his family.

Brokdorff palace was built in 1750-60s years. on the draft Eygtveda, after the death of Baron in 1763, he joined the yard manager Moltke, who two years later sold it to King Frederick V. Since 1767 the palace served as the premise for the Military Academy in 1788 - for the Naval Academy. After the wedding of Princess Wilhelmina and Prince Frederik (later King Frederik VII) renovated in the Empire style palace gave the newlyweds (1828). Close
