Despite the glamour that Hollywood and Disney made of pirates, the life of a pirate was rather short-lived -- about three years -- and dangerous. A few managed to be well off, but most suffered loss of life and despair. What the pirates hated worse than a hanging was to have their bodies caged, strung up, and left to die and rot as a warning to other pirates.
Ernest Hemingway and Walker Evans, in 1933 Cuba, as well as others, are featured here. I was really impressed with the artwork of Mario Sanchez. One of the devices shown was a right-angled mirror attached to a camera to take images of people while appearing to be looking away from them. There's a gift shop for little trinkets.Hours: 9am-5pm, except Christmas.Phone: (305) 295-6616
