Kyoto Costume Museum

Based on the story of the Tale of Genji - The day of the Rokujyo-in.

The life of the rich nobles in the Rokujyu--in(6 strip court) in the 4 seasons using scaled-down but life-like luxury models of the architecture and character figures. The luxury of the aristocratic costumes are meticulously recreated.

On the other side are related products for sale. The best part is the free-of-charge Hen-shin (change image), that allows you to wear the costume of your choice and be photographed with life-size character models of the story.

Extra romantic if you have read the story of the Tale of Genji about the romance between the rich in old Japan (11th century). Even more valuable if you have visited the Tale of Genji Museum in Uji.

P.S. the story had been filmed by Toei at the 50th anniversary of Toei TV/film company staring many star idols.

Open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. Adult 400yen. Students 200-300 yen On the 5th floor of a business building.

I was tipped off that a better private museum in Kyoto is more interesting by a Japanese roomate in Utano Youth Hostel.

So I took the train from Uji rushing back to Kyoto. Take the in-expensive standard-charge taxi to the museum and it is on 5th floor of a commercial building. compact but most area is for the model of the mansion and all figures in nice costumes. Lots of postcards and souvenirs.

Visitors can dress up in the costumes and take picture with life-size dolls/models. (Free of charge for dress up.) Please arrive before 4:30 pm. Weekdays only.

BTW, always bring a small white note book / sketch pad to Japan for the individually well designed ink stamps at every tourist points and station

From journal Last full day in Japan well spent
