Get the Scoop on Key West

A great way to learn the history of Key West and travel through the city is on the Conch Tour Train. The 90-minute tour provides a unique look at the architecture, lush vegetation, tourist spots and neighborhoods of the Conch Republic. If you overlook the corny jokes and typical tourist photo at the start of your ride, it is a fun and informative experience. You will see the southernmost point in the continental US, the first bar - Green Parrot - and the apartment building where Hemingway penned "A Farewell to Arms" on his first visit to KW. The train takes you through the Cuban neighborhood as well as the popular Duvall Street. We also passed St. Mary's Star of the Sea church, where the wedding we were in town for was held. The homes of famous visitors such as Harry Truman and John James Audobon, Robert Frost are en route, as well as the Hemingway House and its resident cats. There are 2 brief stops for souvenir shopping and refreshments.
Although we had free passes from our host, the $29 adult rate is worth the fare.

It was way too long and way too cramped. The cars are small, and for a big guy (like my boyfriend), you feel like a sardine. The tour guide speaks so quickly that you have to pay close attention to understand what he is saying. It is about 90 minutes long, but it stops halfway for restroom breaks. We got off there and didn't get back on. Any information that they shared with us on the tour we could have gotten from a local or out of a book, and we would have been much more comfortable on our bikes or walking.

We have done this type of tour in several cities, and this one was lacking in comparison. Usually, guides are funny or comical in some sense, but the guide seemed as though she did 20 tours a day (and she probably does). The microphone wasn't the best, either, but we sat up front! We really did learn a lot, and it was a good change of pace from the other ports where we had stopped already!

This is a great 'train ride' through time. They'll take you back to the days before civilization when fierce Indians left their enemy's bones to bleach in a tropical wilderness naming the island Bone Key. Explore a lush, tropical island, and discover the charm and grace of one of America's most unique architectural pleasures. Get to know characters like John James Audubon, Ernest Hemingway, and Harry S. Truman and, like them, become captivated by the magic that is Key West. You'll even stop at the ice cream shop for a single scoop cone or a refreshing lemonade to cool you off!
