One of Cairo’s main attractions, the massive Citadel Complex dominates the skyline of Islamic Cairo. Erected on a spur of limestone in the 12th century by Slah al-Din (Saladin), the Citadel is most associated with Mohammad Ali - the early 19th century leader, not the boxer - who freed Egypt from the yoke of Mameluke control. Legend has it that Ali invited over 400 Mameluke leaders to the Citadel for a feast, then had them trapped in a narrow passageway and slaughtered by his men. This bloody history belies the beauty and majesty of the Citadel itself, which provides fantastic panoramas of Islamic Cairo. Attractions here include Al-Gawhara (Jewel) Palace, Mohammad Ali Mosque, Police Museum, Sultan Al-Nasir Mosque, Military Museum, Carriage Museum, Archaeological Musuem, Suleyman Pasha Mosque and Bab el-Azab.
