Alcatraz Island—A Trip into the Unknown

A trip over to Alcatraz Island is a must-do when visiting San Francisco—although I would recommend you book well in advance—and is well worth the money. We boarded the boat at Fisherman's Wharf and had a lovely 20-minute cruise over to the island (even though it was the end of October, it was very much like a British summer day!). When we alighted at the other end, we had a bit of a trek up the hill to get to the actual prison (if your mobility is limited, investigate what help they give, as it is STEEP!), where we were given an audio tour in whichever language we needed. So we put on our headphones and wondered around the historic prison where notorious criminals such as Al Capone were held in tiny little cells stacked three high to the ceiling. They have reconstructions of what cells looked like when they were fully operational, a trip to solitary confinement, and the dining room. All the time you are wandering around, the narrator is telling you about all the escape attempts and people who died in the very room you're standing in!

The views from the island are truly magnificent, which gives you the idea of the torment prisoners must have gone through knowing that civilisation lay a short, shark-infested swim away!

It's a really old jail-type of thing. The boat ride there was fine. I'm not much of a historic person, but I like what it looked like

Alcatraz and Angel Island

The Alcatraz and Angel Island tours were excellent. Alcatraz was remarkable. It was a self-guided tour with a set of headphones that told you which way and when with recorded voices of notable convicts(?), explaining some of the history of the island. Much of the prison was in ruins, but there was a lot open to the public. Angel Island, Ellis Island of the west, we had never heard of, but it was included and opened up part of the history of WWII to us. There is a small lunch grill on the island, or you can bring food. Hiking and relaxing on the island was very nice.

Alcatraz Island was a great place to visit. I do recommend the audio tour if it's your first time. It is very informative, and the cost is very reasonable. My 8-year-old son also loved it. However, make sure to book your reservation early. The tours do sell out rather quickly. And remember to dress warm. It's very chilly on the island.

Alcatraz Island Tour

There is a great Alcatraz Island tour that leaves multiple times a day from Fisherman's Wharf. I recommend that you call ahead or book tickets online in advance because these tours fill up very fast. You usually have to book at least a day or two before you want to go (although that is less true in the off-season).

The boat takes you over to Alcatraz Island. It is a beautiful trip over and you can see the island and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background (if it is not too foggy). You can walk around the island and prison and stay for as long as you'd like--you don't have to go back on a specific boat.

I would recommend doing the guided audio tour of the prison. You just get a cassette that tells you where to go, the history of the prison, and some first-hand accounts from guards and inmates, but it makes it much more interesting. Its really neat to see and understand this piece of history.
