Chief Retainer's House of Yagyu Clan

Description

Shurei Oyamada, head retainer of the 'fencing' Yagyu family and was pivotal in keeping them prominent, formerly resided here. Skilled stonemasons from Owari built the signature stone wall in 1841. The last owner, Sohachi Yamaoka wrote a book (author of an NHK drama based on his novel called Haru no Sakamichi) while living here after he acquired the place in 1964. He, thankfully, specified in his will that the house be donated to the city of Nara.
