Description: The Alamo – also known as the Mission San Antonio de Valera – is one of Texas's most important and popular sites, drawing almost 2.5 million visitors a year. The Alamo gained fame during the Texas Revolution, when a small band of notable Texans – including Davie Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Barrett Travis – held out in the mssion for thirteen days before falling on March 6, 1835. Once an isolated mission, today the Alamo is situated in downtown San Antonio, occupying 4.2 acres at 3300 Alamo Plaza. The site is open every day except Christmas and Christmas Eve, and features the building itself, a Shrine, Long Barrack Museum and a Gift Museum.
