Meeting Jesus
Many people will go and see Lima's cathedral because it's big and obvious on the plaza de Armas. And they won't be making a mistake.
It's a cathedral, and there's lots of the usual stuff. But in addition to the record of the bishops of Lima, there's also a record of the lineage of the Inca Emperors. This is even more impressive when you see that it was barely viable before restoration.
Also a little different is that they got tired of the building falling over every time there was an earthquake. So when they reconstructed it in 1746, they built the entire structure out of Peruvian cedar. You won't notice at first, but look closely at the ceiling and knock on a pillar to find out.
What really made it stand out for me was the quality of the English guiding. It's included in the 10-soles entry, but trust me, you're going to tip.
I was guided by Jesus (rather appropriately) and he was the best guide I thiink I've ever had. Informative, witty, and super-smooth, he really made this cathedral come alive.
Francisco Pizarro is buried here, and his chapel is pretty impressive, but wait until you hear the wild goose chase they had to find his remains!
All in all, Lima cathedral was good value and a fine introduction to this city.
