Description
It was Emperor Kammu's request to the priest Zenshu that resulted in the temple's construction which was finished in 780. In 1135 Akishino-ji suffered almost complete destruction from fire resulting from war. Its elegant main hall contains Buddhist art from both the Kamakura and Heian periods. Now a national treasure, it was rebuilt during the Kamakura period. Also noteworthy is an important cultural property, a statue of the deity of dance and music, Gigei-ten.
