We just happened on this hatchery while looking for the Capilano River Suspension Bridge, located about two minutes downstream. This salmon hatchery was small, tucked out of the way and a joy to find.
You can walk along waters edge and hear the gentle sound of the river spilling over the dam. As you stand there you can count numerous salmon jumping in the water where they enter the stream from the fishway highway from the hatchery. It's fascinating to see how the fish are grown, held, and then released into the stream.
Inside the small building is a glassed wall showing the "steps" that the salmon must climb in the wild to migrate upstream during spawning season. There are huge salmon leaping their way up the various levels, and you can get a close-up look at how they do it.
This hatchery is probably not on many people's "must-see" lists for viewing, but we found it most enjoyable to witness this miraculous event in nature. It is located about 10 minutes from the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and can make a greating outing while in the area to do both the same day. There is no cost to visit the hatchery or park.
