Cape Cod Potato Chip Company Tour

You always need to include a fun place for the kids to visit on your vacations! Okay, okay, my husband was the one who wanted to visit the chip shop. He loves factory tours and seeing how things are made. At first glance, this place would probably be a bore to most kids anyway. But several things save it from being a drag: it’s unstructured, it’s over quickly, and there are generous samples at the end. The tour consists of a single hall with large windows that you peer through to the factory floor. Signs explain the goings-on. There really is not that much to making a potato chip, so the process, and thus the hall, is not very long. At the end is a salesroom offering free samples of various flavors of chips. We got our share and were soon back on the road, happily munching away. It was not a bad stop, but don’t drive across the country to get there.

Here is the factory website.

Cape Cod Potato Chip Company Tour

Not many things are loved by so many as the good old American potato chip. Cape Cod Potato Chip Company has been around since 1980 and has grown to supply delicious, quality chips to people all over the world.

Our tour started with an explanation of the process and the cleaning and inspection of potatoes--tons and tons of potatoes. Then they were sliced and loaded into vats of hot oil, salted, and reinspected. After the completion of the tour, you go to the gift shop and are given a complimentary bag of Cape Cod potato chips. I love just about any industrial tour, and this was was no exception. Every time I eat a Cape Cod chip, I fondly recall that informative tour.

A self-guided tour of the making of Cape Cod Potato Chips is fascinating. A small factory which producess many bags of chips gives a sense of how wide the reaches of industry takes us.
