It was an instant hit with my daughter and after recieving some money at Easter she asked if she could go and make a new bear so I decided to take her to the Build A Bear Workshop in Bury.

Build A Bear is a workshop that allows children to make their own soft toy from start to finish. As you enter the shop you can see rows of soft toys on shelves, buckets of empty soft toys and rails of clothes for the finished article. The idea is to choose a toy, a sound effect, a heart and stuff it before completing the experience on a computer where you name and register your new toy!

We arrived at Build A Bear and I was very happy to see that it was very quiet as our first visit in the Trafford Centre was manic! We were met by a lovely member of staff who talked us through the process which was lovely even though we knew what we were doing, it was a nice personal touch. My daughter spent some time having a look at all the soft toys before deciding on a bright pink octopus which was priced at £18.

After choosing the bear you are then guided towards the stuffing machine where there is a stand featuring all the different sound effects that can be added to your bear. Sounds include "I Love You", dog bark, Happy Birthday and giggles. On this occasion my daughter chose the song "Under The Sea" from the Little Mermaid which was priced at £4.00, the others are £2.50 each. It was then time to stuff the bear, and the lady at the machine was just brilliant with my daughter and went through the whole thing with her which is a standard routine at Build A Bear. My daughter pressed her foot on the pedal to stuff her octopus while the staff member held it on the machine. Once the stuffing was in my daughter was asked to choose a heart for her bear, this is either a small padded heart or a plastic heart that beats (which there is a charge for) so she just chose a pink heart to put inside. There is a little routine they do with the heart, getting the child to hug it, kiss it, and warm it to make the heart seem more "real". I love this little touch as it really gets the child involved in the process of making their bear.

Once the bear is made you are then directed to the clothing area where you can choose an outfit for the bear. It is safe to say there is pretty much every kind of outfit you can think of! After a long time looking my daughter chose a rainbow fairy outfit with light up wings and she wanted shoes to match - it took some explaining that we would need four pairs for an octopus!! The range of outfits is fantastic, from standard clothes to cute fancy dress outfits too so there really is something for everybody. There is a small changing table where you can dress your bear which again is a really nice touch.

When the bear is complete you can then move over to the computers where you register your bear and create a little birth certificate. It is really well explained to the children and the buttons they use are colour and picture coded to make it easier for them. My daughter decided to name her octopus Lily. When paying for your creation you collect the birth certificate and can choose a coloured ribbon to tie it up with. You are asked if you would like a carrier bag or a special box for your bear so we opted for the box which looks like a cute little house which is much more exciting for a child to carry than a standard carrier.

We ended up spending around £35 on our visit to Build A Bear which is quite a lot but I do think the experience was lovely and my daughter absolutely loves her octopus. I can't recommend a visit to Build A Bear enough, it is just fantastic for children....and adults alike!
