Vastly Improved Airport

Over the last 3 to 4 years the airport has been vastly improved thanks to the millions that BAA, who were recently forced to sell the Airport, have ploughed into the Airport.

I have always found that travel to and from the Airport and the city centre to be straight forward and quick. The airport bus is around £7 return and takes about 25 minutes, excellent value for money. There will also be a tram line operating from the Airport to the City Centre around 2014.

Once at the airport I have always found check-in to be a quick, painless (well as painless as it gets) process and the new security zone ensures that you can be through the front door and in the departure lounge in about 10 minutes if you have checked in online.

Once into the Departure Lounge you will find Edinburgh Airport is now a clean, modern facility with a decent choice of eateries. The shopping experience is a far fetched cry from some of the major International airports of the world, but it has a duty free section containing all the goodies although with a Dixons for all your electronic needs. There is also a handful of shops in Boots (Pharmacy), WH Smith (Newagents) and a few clothing shops. You also have coffee shops, such as Costa a pub in the form of a Wetherspoons and eateries such as Yo-Sushi.

On your arrival at Edinburgh, holding a UK passport has meant that for me, a quick and easy escape back out to the car, the airport bus. I'm not sure what Passport Control is like for those non-EU passengers, but queues always seem reasonable.

There are plenty of car hire options at Edinburgh with all the usual suspects in attendance, Avis, Hertz and Europcar to name a few.

I would recommend Edinburgh Airport to anyone flying short haul and there is no doubt it is certainly more appealing that ever for those long haul travelers if it was to add some more long haul routes. For access to places further afield that Europe, you will normally have to change at Heathrow (BA), Amsterdam (KLM) or Paris (Air France).
